ISDN backup for static routes, not running routing protocol

Hi everyone I am trying to set up backup connection for leases line using ISDN. I am not running any routing protocol. I have set up only static routes so i want to know what ISDN backup method should i use as i am not running any routing protocol. Please help me. I am pasting the running configuration of both the routers. Deoli is the one that is dialing for backup and DSCBL is the main server.

Please help me in choosing and also help me with the configuration

Hello Ujjwal,

without dynamic routing protocol you need to use a floating default  route that is with an high administrative distance

on deoli add :

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.50.10.1 221

the last number is the AD and makes this a backup static route used only if the primary default route is removed from IP routing table

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Thanks for the quick reply Giuseppe. Really appreciate it. I tried with what you have said and other different methods too. The issue is when the connection from Deoli goes down it dials to the DSCBL router but the DSCBL router is still using the multilink interface to route its packets hence its not sending packets on ISDN. As a static route has been given in DSCBL that

ip route 192.168.38.0 255.255.255.0 Multilink1

Now come what may this Multilink1 does not go down and if the serial interface at the Deoli end goes down activating the ISDN backup still the Multilink keeps sending packets on that interface even if i put a static route along with this i.e

ip route 192.168.38.0 255.255.255.0 s1/1:15 250

it still uses the multlink.

I tried using OSPF but the routes of OSPF do  not come into the routing table untill the Multilink interface goes down

Now how do i do that when Deoli serial interface s0/1/0 goes down the routes from ospf pop up on DSCBL router or is there any other method

Please reply

Thanks in advance

Hello Ujjwal,

you should run OSPF on the primary link multilink not on the backup ISDN link.

In this way when OSPF fails both routers will agree on using the ISDN backup path.

And OSPF will go down as soon as the OSPF dead interval expire.

Hope to help

Giuseppe
