ISR 4300 - Stuck In Boot Loop after upgrade

Hey Guys,

I have tried to upgrade ISR4331 without upgrading bootloader first and now it is stuck in a boot loop

I'm trying to send a break command but nothing is happening.

If the router is in ROMMON, post the complete output to the following commands: 

1. dir bootflash:
2. set

Hi Leo,

No sorry, it just keeps looping and restarting.

I am trying to send BREAK via putty but it just keeps rebooting and that is it. Any advice on how to get it in to ROMMON?

Post the boot-up process. 
I cannot diagnose without the right information. 

I cannot tell if the router is in a boot-crash-loop or trying to load an incompatible firmware file and booting.  

Otherwise, raise a TAC Case.

Contact Cisco TAC and organize for an RMA.  The flash is dead.

what was the before version, and what version you upgrade to ? (this information help us also)

as mentioned other post, try to break in to ROMMON 

follow steps to get into ROMMON :

If you have the image in USB, try to boot from USB and see if the router boots?

I'm not sure what the previous version was sorry, it's been bricked for a while.

Thank you for the link but looks like the instructions are only if you can already login to the device to set the confreg, but since mine is looping I am unable to do so.

I do have the image and can copy it onto the USB but since I cant get into ROMMON I cant boot from USB unless there is another way?

In my opinion, you have your bootflash: file system damaged

You can try to re-format your flash by issuing a

format flash:

command.

But remember to do a config backup first!!!

After the formatting, copy these config file back.

By the way, while booting, you can change the Serial Port Speed to 1200 and hold SPACE bar on boot up for 10-30 sec.

It may help to entering the ROMMON mode, dont forget to config speed back to 9600 to interact with ROMMON terminal.

I noticed two lines of log:

boot: cannot determine first file name on device "bootflash:/"
boot: unsupported boot device "isr4300-universalk9.16.09.01.SPA.bin"

In my opinion, you may wrongly type the image config command

boot system isr4300-universalk9.16.09.01.SPA.bin
or
boot system bootflash:/
or something else

instead of:

boot system flash:/isr4300-universalk9.16.09.01.SPA.bin

Which makes the Bootloader think "isr4300-universalk9.16.09.01.SPA.bin" or "bootflash:/" is your boot device, but non of the boot image is on them.

To solve the problem, you can try to boot up without loading any configuration. You can find out how to do it, it is same to Password Recovery. Usually executing a confreg 0x<something> after entering the ROMMON

The way may help to abort the boot up and enter rommon 0> command mode are provided above, you can try it.

Well, part of the problem is that I cannot get int to the ROMMON mode.

The device is just stuck in the reloading loop so I cannot set the config values.

I've tried putty, SecureCRT etc and I just spam it with a break key to no success.

I've tried setting the speed to 1200 as you mentioned and holding down space bar for a while and switching back.

Is there anything else i can try?
