L2 VPN

Hello Guys,

1- I was wondering if L2 VPN is limited to a specific data link protocol (e.g. Ethernet, PPP). I got confused when I went through PPTP VPN.

2- If it not limited to a specific protocol, why are we using Layer 3 VPB, as IPSEC?

Thanks,

Ahmad

L2 VPNs is a term used when you extend you LAN across sites,  I believe these can be protocol independent as all you are doing is adding a MPLS label to the packet.

The reason people choose L2 VPNs over L3 is that they control there own IP ranges and are responsible for the routing of there own traffic and do not need to rely  on the ISP for any routing changes/issues.
