Measure data transfer

Hi all,

I have a question but don't know where to look for.

We have 2 data centers, East Datacenter and West Datacenter. I need to transfer 10 terabyte of data across a T3 link. How long it is going to take? How can I set the window size, MTU in order to use the entire DS3 circuit? Thanks for your help.

Well if this isn't a joke, 10 terabytes is 80,000,000,000,000 bits. To transfer that over a T3 which is only 45,000,000 bits a second it would take aprox 1,800,000 seconds which is over 20 days to transfer that much. You would be better off getting a OC-192 which would only take 2 hours to transfer that amount of information. Of course you would never get a server to transfer information that fast because your limited by the speed at which the server can transfer information from the hard drive to your NIC. So in reallity your limited by the hard drive

Thanks for your response,

Well, I wasn't clear in my question. We are trying to determermind how much bandwidth do we need to trasfer 10 terabytes over a WAN link. I would like to know if there some caculation based on delay of the link and I/O process from Datacenter A replicate to Datacenter B. What kind of tool/method outhere I can use? We are going to buy a circuit, maybe OC-48 that can transfer 10Terabytes in 1 week.

Please advise.

IPERF is a program you can use and this link also has many documents explaining how to tune your network.

Thanks,

The IPERF I downloaded is used for Unix not for Window, Is there a software for Winddow?, Is there like a chart of measurement the throughput based on delay and bandwidth? Please help..Thanks

Bill,

If you look at the document at down side then you will find this tool for win32 application and its an .exe file.

It should help you...
