Has anyone had any experience of configuring OTV on ASR 1100 series routers
I am looking at a redesign of our two data centres, having had a hard sell on Nk7s we are struggling to work out whether we even require them.
OTV had popped into the equation but I have seen a couple of articles stating that an ASR is capable of running this.
We are updating our MPLS routers to ASRs, so I was thinking we could utilize this feature
Are there any known issues with this approach.

Hi Simon,
I've not used ASR 1000 for OTV, but have used CSR 1000V. The configuration is the same as both platforms are based on IOS-XE and works as required.
I think the major difference you'll find for OTV operating on ASR 1000 and CSR 1000V against the Nexus 7000 is one of performance. The Nexus 7000 obviously performs the encapsulation of the MAC frames in hardware so is going to scale beyond that of a software based platform.
I'm not sure if anyone else here has numbers for OTV performance on the ASR 1000, but it's probably worth you going back to your Cisco rep with details of the specific ASR platform you're considering and the expected traffic volumes for OTV and ask for their view.

I've done a few installs of OTV with ASR's. I actually prefer them over 7k's. You will need to be careful if you plan to terminate your mpls and otv on the same router. There are a lot of caveats depending on your wan and design.

Hi Colin
Thanks for coming back to me.
I am planning on terminating the MPLS and OTV on the same router
Can you elaborate on what I need to look out for

Is there another (better) option for a stretching subnets between two data centres?
