Hi,
I've configured PIM in my 3745 router it has two FastEthernet interface 0/0 and 0/1 . Interface 0/1 is connected with server side and interface 0/0 is connected with client side. Both interfaces are configured with ip pim sparse-mode and RP is configured at interface 0/1's IP scheme. Interface 0/1 is receiving all groups therefore the link of 0/1 is choking. Is this default behavior or I've miss configured it?
Interface 0/1 IP is: 1.1.1.1
RP is: 1.1.1.1
Interface 0/0 IP is: 2.2.2.1
Kindly help to fix the choking issue.
Regards,
Asim

It doesn't sound like you have things configured incorrectly, but that you are try to push too much through an interface. You need to determine what the demand is and the subsequent traffic throughput needed. If it exceeds the bandwidth of the interface then you may need to upgrade.
Hope this helps.

Thank you chrihussey.
I just want to know that is this default behavior or not? if it is default then i know that i need to upgrade the interface as per requirement / required bandwidth.

Asim

If the router is simply providing the necessary traffic which exceeds the interface's capabilities then yes it is default behavior and doing what it should. This is where you need to determine if you should be seeing this amount of traffic or if something else is going on.
Do "sh ip mroute active" to determine the number of streams occurring. Also check the multicast source's to see how much traffic they are generating. Make a determination as to how much traffic each stream requires. In addition, is the rest of the network set up for sparse mode?
So quite respectfully, without knowing how much traffic is expected, you cannot make the determination whether or not something is wrong.

Yes only interface is choking not the CPU.

so, you have around 6Mbps multicast stream.
What is the banwidth of choking link?
And could you explain - what do you meen when you say "choking"?
could you provide the outputs
sh int f0/0
sh int f0/1
sh ip mroute
sh proc cpu sorted 5min

Yes because 2 users have joined 2 different groups.

It is interesting that the server side interface F0/1 has 55Mb of input traffic, yet the client side interface (F0/0) is only putting out 3Mb. Are these the only interfaces in play on the router or is it moving traffic out other interfaces?
Clearing the counters and setting the load interval to 30 seconds on each interface may provide a clearer picture.
Also, it's interesting to note that 50% of the traffic on the F0/1 interface is broadcast traffic. I believe this includes multicast also, which could be a possible explanation, but it would be worthwhile to determine what is happening on that LAN segment. A sniffer trace may provide some answers.

55Mbs is only at server side interface client side interface has only the traffic of client's stream/groups
50% of traffic is multicast which is being shown as broadcast.

It looks as if the 10.9.4.117 host is constantly sending all the multicast streams, which I believe would not be out of the ordinary. The 3745 is the multicast router for the segment and sees them. That would explain the 50Mb of traffic on the interface. Whatever the router doesn't need will be discarded just like any other LAN broadcast. The fact that there is only 3Mbs of multicast traffic going out the other interface indicates it is only forwarding multicasts that are needed.
Unless there are issues with hosts joining multicast groups or quality it appears (to me anyway) that things are working as they should.
I'm sure this is apparent but I'll say it anyway. The 3745 well past its production life (Mar 2012). If it does become a question of interface utilization it would be a good idea to upgrade.
Regards
