QoS for http

Hello Folks.

I've about 8 months on QoS, but am struggling to figure out how to allow fast browsing, but shape downloads via http. Does this have something to do with the tcp session time to a host? Traffic shaping seems applicable but not sure. Many thanks.

Hello Richard,

you can control how traffic is sent to the internet with shaping

But in the return path where downloads happen you are dependent on your ISP settings.

So you can do something by shaping towards the client vlans/your intranet but just after the internet bandwidth has been already used by http traffic in downstream.

I don't understand what you want to achieve you want fast browsing but to control Bandwidth used in downstream.

Thank you for the reply. I wasn't very clear in my requirement, sorry it was a bit wishy washy. Ok we have a 20MB fiber link directly on to the internet and are a Tier II ISP - we rent a port from the local Telco and their fiber switch. We have ISA server that has a QoS application on it. All http/https trafic is sent via this ISA Array. Customers have leased lines into our NOC. A Customer will have a 1024Kbps line for example, but is only given 256Kbps for www traffic. One User does a download via http and the entire allocted 256K can be consumed. I've noted with some ISP's when you start downloading, it will start at say 100Kbps but within 10mins it's shaped down to a steady 30Kbps but browsing is still good. It is possible to shape a tcp session based on time and bandwidth?
