Hi all
I have two 1941 routers both with HWIC-1T and HWIC-3G-HSPA interfaces.
I set these up to talk over frame relay in a lab using a cross over cable. Once I got this working, the routers were shipped to their respective homes, about 100km apart and 2000km from my desk.
The routers are connected to Telstra NTU-4S boxes and are supposed to be able to talke to each over. Both routers report s0/0/0 as down and down. With 'deb serial int' both routers are repeating 'wic_mbrd_sync_mode_reg_init:: was DCE, now set to DCE' every 30 seconds.
Both routers have 'clock rate 2000000' in their configs and I've been unable to remove this line. Both routers have had 'frame intf dte' typed in the config (frame intf doesn't show in show run).
I'm stumped. Any one got any ideas on this?
Thanks in advance.

When the connection was a cross over cable you obviously need the serial controller to be DCE. Now that the connection is not cross over cable but is Telestra I guess that the serial controller needs to be DTE.
As a note about this there is a DTE/DCE distinction for the serial controller that is different from the DTE/DCE for the frame relay interface configuration.

Hi Rick
Yes, you're right. The Telstra NTU is the DCE so the Cisco 1941's must be DTE.
One thing I forgot to mention is that 'show controller s0/0/0' states that the serial cable is not connected.
The Telstra techs claim that the line is OK (they can talk to their NTUs) but they don't have LMI (can't talk to the 1941's).

If the show controller output says that the cable is not connected then there is some kind of problem between the router and the Telstra and you need to find and solve that before we worry about anything else. It could be as simple as the cable not connected or not connected correctly. Or it might be something more complex.
Is the Telstra connection a Frame Relay service? (Does the connection through Telstra really connect to a Frame Relay switch?)
It may be obvious but I will point out anyway that there probably are some things that you needed to configure when the connection was routers back to back that you do not need when the connection is to real Frame Relay.

Hi Rick
kununurra#show run int s0/0/0
Building configuration...
Current configuration : 178 bytes
!
interface Serial0/0/0
ip address 192.168.57.1 255.255.255.0
encapsulation frame-relay
clock rate 2000000
frame-relay interface-dlci 16
frame-relay lmi-type ansi
end
How do I force the physical (and the frame-relay) interface to be DTE?
Also, does it matter that 'clock rate 2000000' is in the config?
Thanks

Yes and yes.
I spent quite a while on the phone with a L2 Telstra tech and about another half hour with an L3 Telstra Tech yesterday afternoon.
Briefly, the history here is that there were Nortel routers in place but the two sites (Kununurra and Wyndham) have been unable to communicate since a lightning strike a few weeks ago. Our own tech has been on site and took screen shots of the Nortel routers config. Telstra have been on site and replaced the NTU-4S at both sites.
The decision was made to replace the Nortels due to age and the fact that our tech was unabkle to get them to talk to the NTUs. The cables the Cisco 1941s are using are brand new (smart serial to X21 - db15). Multiple people have confirmed the cables are connected properly between the Cisco and NTU.

Hmm, I wonder if this is my problem.
The cables connecting the 1941's to the NTUs are http://www.blackbox.com.au/PRODUCT.cfm?PARTNUMBER=EHC260-0010
The description is "CISCO SMART SERIAL CABLE X21/DB15M DTE 3M". Does this mean DTE at the X21 end? Does it matter?
I'm now looking at
http://www.blackbox.com.au/PRODUCT.cfm?PARTNUMBER=EHC270-0010 for which the description is "CISCO SMART SERIAL CABLE X21/DB15F DCE 3M", of course then we'd need a DB15 gender bender as the NTU needs male cables.
Thoughts?

I am not sure, but I would think that the DTE cable would be what you want.
I wonder about the fact that the config still has the clock rate command. In my experience of IOS routers that command only shows up when the controller believes that it is connected using DCE cables. So if the command is still in the config then it could be part of the problem.
I am not familiar with the Telstra equipment. Could you ask them if they can specify what they expect to be configured on your end of the connection?
It might also help us if you would post the output of show inventory and/or show diag to help us identify the card for the serial connection. And the output of show controller might also be helpful.

Not sure how much detail is needed so apologies in advance if I'm providing too much.
Telstra are definately expecting our end to be DTE. Is that what you were asking?

I've powered up an old 1721 that I had laying around. It has a WIC-1T (DB60) interface.
1) No cable attached:
Interface Serial0
Hardware is PowerQUICC MPC860
No serial cable attached
idb at 0x815C8B94, driver data structure at 0x815D0698
2) DCE end of DTE/DCE crossover cable attached (nothing on other end of cable)
Interface Serial0
Hardware is PowerQUICC MPC860
DCE V.35, no clock
idb at 0x815C8B94, driver data structure at 0x815D0698
3) DTE end of DTE/DCE crossover cable attached (nothing on other end of cable)
Interface Serial0
Hardware is PowerQUICC MPC860
DTE V.35 clocks stopped.
idb at 0x815C8B94, driver data structure at 0x815D0698
Given the above, is it reasonable to think that the cables on the 1941's are faulty as the routers should be at least recognising that something is plugged in?

Thank you for the additional information. I hoped that it might point at an issue but I do not see anything obvious in it.
I would think that faulty cables would certainly be a possibility to investigate since the router is not recognizing the cables.
I am not familiar with the Telstra NTU-4S and wonder if there is anything that needs to be done on it to activate the connection to the router?

Hi Rick
Thank you for the help with this. We've organised for those smart serial to X21 cables to be sent back to us for testing. I'll post back when I have a result.
According to Telstra, Cisco routers don't require special settings to talk to these NTU.
Umm, apologies if this is bad form, but could I ask you to cast your eye over
https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2143193 (routing between 3g interfaces)?
Many thanks
