Have a look at WSUS, lets you control updates sent to your clients.

we dont use WSUS for window patching. whenever we build a new laptop / desktop we run windows update to download from internet. i am looking for options to restrict such downloads on the internet router.

OK, so what gateway/router/firewall do you have that you could apply restrictions on?

Hi,
You can definitely restrict the downloading/ingress bandwidth by policing the traffic using QOS but it depends on what device you are planning to do that. Let us know the device.
If you simply want to restrict the b/w consumption by windows update, deploy a Microsoft WSUS server in your network and manage all the windows updates for all the computers with just a couple of clicks.
Thanks

You can police that traffic on first ingress port that supports policing.
However, if that traffic doesn't slow with drops, it could still congest your ingress. Even if that traffic does slow when there are drops, it might burst congest your ingress before it slows itself. (The latter can be somewhat mitigated policing even slower.)
You might also shape egress ACKs, if the traffic has them.

For what device (and IOS version)?
To show what?
(Reason for the questions, there's whole books on just QoS, and syntax and features can vary much per platform/IOS.)
