Router Backup

Quick Question:

What is best practice when it comes time to making config changes and backing up router.

What I am currently doing is. Prior to making the changes, I ensure I have a good backup. I make changes to config, save with a WR command and see if they worked. If so, I backup current config and save. If not, I undo the changes manually by edititng the running config.

Someone suggested that I should download the running config, edit it offline, copy edited config to running config. This doesn't sound right to me.

I would like to know what best practices are.

Thanks

it is wise to perform a copy of the startup-config before saving the running after new changes have been added. this allows you to go back to the backed up startup-config in case the running config has issues you may not have noticed before you saved it.

a good practice is to input your new configuration changes and test. if all is well, then save the changes.

(in IOS, changes are active on the fly. there is no need to write to memory to activate new config changes)

Thanks
