Hi All,

I need router / L3 switch suggestion to cater 1Gbps WAN link throughput with running BGP protocol. Is it Cisco catalyst 4500/6500 able to handle this WAN thoughput?

Hi Joseph,

Firewall is not under my control, but they do have HA unit in passive mode. Basically i want to run static route in firewall(less load to firewall). So it should have default route pointing to one ASR. What if the these ASR goes down. Some suggesting to run HSRP between ASR, and firewall shall point default gateway to HSRP virtual IP. All traffic goes to primary router in HSRP group, and then forwarded to secondary ASR via iBGP according to routing policy. But one concern, if this is the case, will it cause asymmetric route, as the outgoing traffic might flow from primary ASR to secondary ASR and to Internet, but return route from internet flow to secondary ASR and direct to Firewall?

If I place a WAN link load balancer between firewall and these ASR, can it do load balancing then? Good example of load balancer is www.elfiq.com
Should i concern anything before placing LB ?

(Sorry for delay in this response.)

If the ASRs don't have to deal with NAT, shouldn't matter which router packets flows out on and its return path.

If FW is using static IP routing, in addition to iBGP between your routers, use mHSRP.

If ASRs support PfR, shouldn't need an external load balancer, and even mHSRP with iBGP might be "good enough".  If you do use an external load balancer, then you also need to see if it creates a single-point-of-failure and/or and what, if any, L3 impact it might have to routing.
