routing and switching

Hi all,

Pls look in to the following scenario.

A router having 2 fastethernet ports ,both in the same subnet,say 192.168.1.0/24.PCs are connected to these ports.One P.C want to send packets to the other P.C .My question is how does the router know to switch these packets instead of routing..Because ,if u give a sh ip route ,it will show 192.168.1.0/24 pointing towards the two fast ethernet interfaces.And a probable answer is the router looks in the arp table,and forward the packets..Is this answer correct...or the question itself is wromg..?

Hello Thomas,

as a matter of fact, the router would not allow you to put both interfaces in the same subnet. Not sure if you have access to a router, but if you do, try to type in an IP address from the same subnet on a second interface, the router returns the following message:

IP address x.x.x.x overlaps with interface X
