Selection of particular router

I wanted to know how do you select router for a particular type of network like

a) I have worked on 1721 VPN router what could be its replaced

b) Is there any document how the router series goes like which is low series router & which is higher.

c) Any document on common router used in market these days

few things i would suggest to consider before going on for a upgrade is about the reduandcy plan for both links and modules.

like you can have different links for backup purpose and also to have different slots for different wan modules to be inserted.

also the amount of traffic to be handled .whether its gonna be pure internet surfing traffic or any kinda vpn being used.

Any plans for any encryption module to be used based on the locations and the size of the network connectivity.

these are the few basic inputs or points to be looked in before going on for upgrade.
