A ping demonstrates network connectivity. The host receiving an echo request responds with an echo reply that contains exactly the same data. The data used is up to the sender, and can be changed in an extended ping by a router. The default for a Cisco router is hex characters ABCD. A default 32 byte Windows ping uses ASCII characters abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwabcdefg hi Longer pings simply repeat the patterns.
