Hi guys,
Just a general question for all of you. I am running a 1941 isr g2 router, which, according to my specs is equivalent to a cisco 3825 - which i also own.
Why would the cpu usage hover around 45% or so with ONE machine running torrents? There is really no packet inspection etc...or anything else that would cause the cpu to work really hard...I am on a 100/5 connection.
Any ideas or opinions on this?

Here is a 'show processes' dump for you. Maybe you can shed some light on why ONE machine is kicking the daylights out of this router...
I want to get the cpu utilization down...no problem with the torrents.

Since your total CPU and Interrupt CPU are so close, show process CPU might not provide any indication of unusual CPU usage. I.e. CPU is being used for "normal" packet forwarding.
If CPU is being used for "normal" packet forwarding, the difference between a 3825 and 1941 CPU consumption might be related to volume of traffic flowing through the two different routers, type of traffic flowing through the two different routers, different architecture of the two different routers (even though they have about the same PPS ratings), or some combination of these.

Hi guys,
Soooo..we did the above cpu dump having ONE machine tax the isp connection. So what you see is a machine with roughly 300 connections running a torrent download and fully using all of the 100/5 connection. My question is if we move to a 250/15 connection and the same scenerio, will we see the 1941W at 100% because we will roughly double the isp WAN connection? If so, I guess we might have to move to a 2900 series and above for faster PPS? Yes / no? OR is it memory related? It's tough to figure out the cause because the cpu dump doesn't show anything abnormal.
Ideas?

On a 1941, if you saturating your 100/5 connection, 55% appears reasonable because Cisco lists a 1941, at 75% CPU, able to forward 120 Mbps of IMIX traffic with HQoS, 91 Mbps of IMIX traffic with PAT, or 76 Mbps with IMIX with NAT + QoS + ACL.
Doubling the volume of existing traffic would likely max out the CPU. So yes, if you want to use a larger capacity link, you might need a more powerful router.
As a rough rule of thumb, not exceeding 75% CPU is good, so you still have a little head room with your 1941.

Normally you size a router based on volume and kind of traffic, and what features you'll be using.

Hi Joseph,
So, just following along the topic...Instead of upgrading, we are looking at utilizing our 2821 in conjunction with the 1941 and load balance between the 2 still using the 100/5 connection. Possible? The reason is that there is a possiblilty to up our wan speed to roughly double and we don't want to overwhelm the 1941.
Ideas, sugggestion?

Two routers sharing a connection? Yes, might be possible, although difficult to balance out CPU load.
If you directed outbound flows to each router in proportion to its CPU capacity, return flows would (hopefully) be in about the same proportion.

Unsure two routers on one link would be "better", although does offer router redundancy. An "up'ed" router would be easier, although more expensive. You might try the multiple routers on a faster shared link and if unsatisfactory, replace with an "up'ed" router.
