what is the best approach to trunk 4 different vlans to a vmware box?

I'm assuming this is ESXi? Enable a trunk to the VMWare box - with the allowed VLANs (not required)
In ESXi follow this article that also provides configuration example for ESXi and the switch.

Awesome, thank you... by the same token, will it be considered for HyperV (win box) too?

Yes Hyper-V works similar. You would have a vSwitch in Hyper-V and can set VLANs per VM.
