VXLAN BGP EVPN Multisite

Hello

Currently running BGP EVPN VXLAN in one site, and planning to extend the fabric to another site. Can the spine switches at a site function as border gateways as well connected to a L3 routing network? Or do I need to purchase dedicated hardware to function as border gateway?

thanks

Hello @mannycho

Best practices are one things, field reality is often another landscape.

It's possible for spine switches in a data center fabric to function as border gateways while also serving their traditional role within the fabric. This approach is often referred to "collapsed spine" architecture with other constructor.

In this setup, the spine switches handle both the internal routing and forwarding within the fabric and also act as the border gateway for external connectivity to the wider L3 network.

Depending on the size and requirements of your network, you may need to ensure that the spine switches have sufficient resources (CPU, memory, etc.) to handle both internal and external routing traffic efficiently.

Best regards

@mannycho

You might want to use the BGW on the Spine, however there are some drawbacks. I would suggest to carefully look into the various designs and go for the one that fits your requirements considering future expansion.
