Hi,

Got a basic query. I have heard WAN providers talk about wan connections over layer2 and layer 3 links

what is the difference between wan connection on layer2 or layer3 and how do we differentiate/identify which of these applies to any existing wan links.

Thanks for all help in advance!

Hi,

If you are using Ethernet over leased line ? Normally this is done when you want to have L2 connectivity between two offices over leased line, you could trunk your VLAN's over Leased Line using Ethernet if your VLAN's span multiple offices ( not a good idea in a large network), connecting to a services provider for let say internet services will be different.

Most carriers offer three connection types:

   1. Circuit-switched connections
   2. Packet-switched or cell-switched connections
   3. Dedicated connections

There are many different types of protocols used throughout the world, depending on location, type of WAN, and administrator knowledge. These protocols all operate at layer 2 (at least) of the OSI model (data-link layer). Each type of connection has its advantages and disadvantage

Following are the type of connection provided in WAN

Circuit-switched connections
Asynchronous dial-in
ISDN
Packet-switched or cell-switched connections
Frame relay
X.25
ATM
Dedicated connections

Hope to Help !!
