Hello,
here is a pretty good link. Keep in mind that nowadays, pretty much anything can connect with anything. There are e.g. serial to Ethernet connectors...

What kind of cable/fiber can be used for ethernet or serial interface?
What it's designed to support.
Some times it might only support one specific cable. Other times, various cabling options are possible. Choice often determined by bandwidth and distance that needs to be supported.
Unfortunately, I don't believe I've seen a single link that addresses the breadth of your question.
For same reason, "some explanation" would be very long.
Try searching (Internet, Wiki, Cisco's main site) for cat3, cat5, cat5e, cat6, cat6a and cat7 to address copper Ethernet. For fiber, there's different variants of MM and SM fiber. Then with those go different optics to support different distances and technologies.
For serial, try initially searching for RS (EIA/TIA) - ### standards or the V.## standards.
You might also try a question like this on Cisco's learning forums.

For Ethernet, broadly speaking, there are two options and these are:
You choose the appropriate one using the media-type cmd. The anchored link refers to some legacy options which are no longer relevant. In today's networks, the options are rj45 OR sfp.
Typically, you may want to pose the question to your service provider. They can provide the accurate and more importantly the precise/specific answer.
