When should I use MSDP ?

I tried to learn MSDP and could not figure out where I have to use it. I used the following Topology for a test.

MSDP.JPG

Without MSDP,  R4 can ping 239.5.5.5 and R3 can ping 239.6.6.6. So when do I have to use MSDP.  Within each AS, I used OSPF as IGP.  EBGP is used to connected two AS.
I mutually redistributed OSPF and BGP on R1 and R2.

thanks for any comments !

Hi,

You would want to use MSDP when you have multiple AS in separate domains like the example you have specified. In you example you would run MSDP between R1 and R2 to manage multicast between the domains AS65001 and AS65002. R1 is RP for domain as65001 only  and R2 is RP for domain AS65002 only. MSDP would be used to control multicast allowed into each domain

Within a single multicast domain, you can also use MSDP if you are using anycast RP. In this case MSDP is used to share SA info among the RPs in one domain

Thanks

John
