WIC CARD 1DSU-T1 showing as serial on config

I have a question that I cannot find an answer to.  I have a 2811 router at our Switzerland location that has 2 single WICS.  When I do a sho ver it gives me the following information:

2 FastEthernet interfaces

2 Serial interfaces

2 Channelized E1/PRI ports

1 Virtual Private Network (VPN) Module

I am wondering why it shows the router having 2 serial interfaces when there are no serial modules.

The following portion of the config created the serials:

controller E1 0/0/0

channel-group 0 timeslots 1-31

description Sprint Circuit

!

controller E1 0/1/0

framing NO-CRC4

channel-group 1 timeslots 1-31

description Qwest circuit

Interfaces Created:

interface Serial0/0/0:0

interface Serial0/1/0:1

Once again, my question is, "Why would this be done?"

Just curious.

Thanks,

Scott

Because when used for data, E1 is a serial interface.

Hello Scott,

It seems to be you have a VWIC2-2MFT-T1/E1 that you configured as an E1 after applying a "card type E1" command. Those are indeed serial interfaces unless you are trying to configure a PRI (voice or data). Probably, you are confused for that card does not use a Cisco smart serial connector as an HWIC-1T does but they are always considered serial interfaces for they are T1/E1 circuits.

What is the purpose of this configuration?

Are you configuring a voice or data circuit?

Are you supposed to build a multilink?

Regards.

Paolo abd Jose,

Thank you for your responses. I am not having any issues with the device. .I was just curious why the configuration showed serail when in fact, there were no physical serial cards. The congiuration on this router has been around years before I even started at the company. The question was brought up to me by a colleague and I guess I had never paid attention to that before.

Everything y'all have mentioned makes perfect sense. thanks for the education!
