WS-X6708-10GE port showing down/down

imstha001

Hello,

I have installed WS-X6708-10GE in cisco 6509 Switch and it is recognize by the switch. Now I need to move the connectivity from existing WS-X6704-10GE but seems port does not come up it shows down/down. I am using xenpak in existing interface and X2 in new interface. Please let me know if you have any idea.

so here is the problem. The switch is having the SUP card with 3BXL PFC card but the slot 3 is having a 3C based daughter card (DFC). This is why the module is not powering UP. As a quick fix, what you can do is, pull out the card and remove the DFC module from top of the card (only try this if you are aware of the process else the card may get damaged) and reinsert teh card which will just be a CFC based card. This will allow the card to boot up fine.

Or alternatively if you have a different daughter card such as 3B or 3BXL, then add that on module 3 and install it into the chassis.

the existing DFC card will not work with the current SUP card.

Hope this answers your question.

Vinit

According to this, the combination should work in 3B mode:

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/switches/catalyst-6500-series-switches/107258-C6K-PFC-DFC-CFC.html#qa1

The thing is, most likely a reload would be required (I'm guessing the 3C-based card was inserted in the already running 3BXL-based system)...

Could you please share the below outputs in a file and attach it to this thread:

- show module

- show diagnostic events

- show fab chann

show interface x/y

when you say you are moving the connection, are you moving the connection along with the XFP or just the cable.

I have inserted in different slot

It seems like you either do not have enough power on the system or the line card is bad.

Could you please share the below output:

- show env

- show power

the fabric looks good. so it drills down to one of the above scenario's.

Also, check your configuration to ensure that the line card power is not disabled

Regarding the mismatch of the DFC, Could you please check which DFC are you using. Hope it is not 3CXL series. The SUP card is 3BXL.

Please share the complete show module output and show inventory output from the switch as it will give us more clarity.

so here is the problem.

Yes agree to what Lulian mentioned, that might be supported with two impacts - reload + reduced capacity of the LC.

Thanks

It is working fine with the cisco 6504 with supervisor Engine WS-SUP720-3B.

Here is the output.

  4  Distributed Forwarding Card WS-F6700-DFC3C     SAL1333WC6X  1.4    Ok

This SUP720 is 3B, the other one was 3BXL - for the router, treating a newly inserted 3C card as 3B is easy, but "downgrading" the whole system from XL mode to non-XL mode requires a reload.

Thanks Vinit for your valuable input. It is working after rebooting the system.

As you mention I might need to add daughter card to enhance the system performance.
