SD-WAN devices power consumption measurement

My customer has power sustainability requirements and he wants to get the power consumption report from each SD-WAN device in the network. what would be the best way to do it? Cisco uses Crosswork Data and NSO to measure power consumption on Nexus 9k and other DC devices, but how this can be done for the Cat8k, ISR4k and 1K?

Hi,

SNMP should do that. And you will have view from your SNMP based network monitoring tool.

But which MIB and OID gives that information I don't know. Better to open TAC case and ask for it.

HTH,
Please rate and mark as an accepted solution if you have found any of the information provided useful.

Hello Mounir,

few things you can do:

SNMP Monitoring:

  1. Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is often used to collect various metrics, including power consumption, from network devices.
  2. You can set up SNMP on your Cisco device and use software like SolarWinds, Nagios, or PRTG to monitor power consumption.
  3. Cisco devices have specific SNMP OIDs (Object Identifiers) that can provide power-related data.

CLI Commands:

  1. Use show power inline command on switches that support Power over Ethernet (PoE) to get a real-time view of the power being used by each port.
  2. For routers and switches with integrated power supplies, you can use the show environment power command to display the power supply status.

Cisco EnergyWise:

  1. Cisco EnergyWise technology is designed to measure and control the energy consumption of IP devices such as phones, laptops, and access points.
  2. You can use the EnergyWise commands in the device CLI to gather power statistics.

Syslog and NetFlow:

  1. Both Syslog and NetFlow can be configured to send alerts based on power consumption metrics, although this is more of an indirect way to monitor power usage.

Hardware-Based Solutions:

  1. If your devices are hosted in a data center, consider using smart PDU (Power Distribution Units) that can provide detailed power consumption statistics.
  2. Some modern Cisco hardware comes equipped with built-in power sensors that can directly report on power usage.

External Power Meters:

  1. Hardware-based power meters can be attached to the router or switch to measure power consumption. This is often considered the most accurate method but also requires additional hardware investment.

hope this helps,

Hassan
