FEX Routed Port

I've read that the default behavior of an interface on a FEX is to be in routed mode.

On these interfaces, do they function just like an L3 interface would directly on a 7K line card? Can you assign an IP address to the interface or must you use an SVI and put the FEX interface in that vlan? Do routing protocols such as OSPF run on the L3 interface on the FEX?

Beginning with Cisco Release 5.2(1), you can configure a Fabric Extender (FEX) port as a Layer 3 interface for host connectivity, but not for routing. See the

In Cisco Nexus 2000 Series NX-OS Fabric Extender Software Configuration Guide for 6.2(x), it says:

Beginning with CiscoNX-OS Release6.2(2),the FEX supports queuing, which allowsa router to be connected to a Layer 3 FEX interface or a router to be connected to a Layer 2 FEX interface (usingSVI)

Follow these guidelines for a router that is connected to a Layer 2 FEX interface (usingSVI):

•You can configure routing adjacency with Layer 3 on the peer router

•You can configure routing adjacency with SVI on therouter using access/trunk interfaces

Does this mean it's now supported through the FEX?

Hi rfalconer.sffcu,

Did you find the answer or tried it out? I am interesting to know if anybody did dynamic routing through FEX port.

Thanks.
