SNASw and EE question

Dear forum hello,

we have come to a design issue and I will need your guidence. We have a 7206 router (actually there are 2 but let's concedrate for the moment on 1) whixh is connected to an OSA ethernet card. This router runs SNASw/DLSW+ and has about 40 serial interfaces that connect to the branches (numbers are not important for this question). The branch routers run dlsw+ , peering with the headend router.

On the Mainframe, we have activated EE, so we have HPR/IP connection from M/F to 7206, and from there dlsw with the branch routers.

What we want to accomplish, is a new connection with another company (SNI connection) using EE as replacement. Is it possible to use, let's say the 41 serial interface of the 7206 to this job? How it is possible to exclude the 41 serial interface from the SNASw process? We just want a pure IP connection with the opposite M/F since they are running EE on their M/F too.

Hello Apostolos,

yes, you can use the 41st serial connection to route your EE/udp packets to the other company. You would use ppp or hdlc (not sdlc) on the serial interface. You will also need to put in place the appropriate routing (static or routing protocol) so that packets destined for the other company's EE dynamic VIPA address get routed over the 41st serial interface. Packets destined for the snaswitch EE interface stop at the router.

On the m/f you will need to add a PU that represents the adjacent link station to the other company's EE connection. This PU will require a PATH statement to identify the other company's target IP address. Keep in mind that this connection will not be very fast, and you may need to lower the capacity (on each m/f via a TG profile or capacity keyword) for this PU. Each m/f must be configured as a border node (BN=YES) since you are replacing an SNI connection.

I was worried that snasw running on cisco would have an impact on the connection between the 2 mainframes, although this would be a pure IP connection.

no, there should be no impact. The only concern I had was that you would be using a slow serial connection on the path between the two mainframes, hence my suggestion to set the CAPACITY accordingly on the m/f PU definitions.
