I have a 7204 with CPA interface to MVS. Cmpc config through director. Everything works OK except for a small anoyance. When I do a "sh ip route" I can see both the VIPA address in the MVS and the link address. If i shut down the link inside MVS, the link address goes away from the "sh ip route" command but the VIPA stays. Shouldn't it also go away since the actual link is down and the router knows it? Just like it does when a serial link goes down.

I think it takes some time to take refresh the entries, if you are using any command to clear the entiries with manually and enable debug command to see the status of your peoblem.

The VIPA address is kind like loopback address on the router. If you have any other physical path availabe besides the CMPC, the router might be able to learn it.
Which interface is it learned from? The information is in "sh ip route", and more you can get more information from "sh ip route x.x.x.x", the x.x.x.x is your VIPA address.

No there is no other way to access the mainframe.
The sh ip route or sh ip ro x.x.x.x gives the same answer(for that particular address). I think that the router process only looks if the physical channel is available and sure it is up. Even if one of the tg is down. The sh ip route x.x.x.x says it is known from "static".
