Add Storage to Windows Active Directory Domain and Configuration Permissions for Domain Users on NSS300 Series Network Smart Storage

Objectives

This document explains how to add storage to Windows Active Directory domain and how to configure permissions for domain users on NSS32x Series Network Smart Storage. Active Directory (AD) is used to assign wide policies to all elements of the network, deploy programs to many computers, and apply critical updates to an entire organization. The aim of this article is to make clear how to join the NSS300 series to a Windows Active Directory domain and also provide an example on how to configure permissions on shares for domain users.

Note: Users need to make sure that that the Active Directory domain has been set up on the Windows Server.

How to Add Storage to Windows AD Domain and Configure Permissions

Step 1. Use the web configuration utility and choose Network Services > Microsoft Networking. The Microsoft Networking page opens:

Step 2. Check Enable File Service for Microsoft Networking to enable the file service. It is enabled by default.

Step 3. Click AD Domain Member to enable the Active Directory domain.

Note: The Quick Configuration Wizard may be used to configure the DNS information on the NAS, synchronize the time of the NAS with the domain controller and join the NAS to an Active Directory Domain. To define the Active Directory Domain, click Quick Configuration Wizard.

Step 4. (Optional) Enter the name of the NSS300 in the Server Description field.

Step 5. Enter the name of the domain in the Domain NetBIOS Name field.

Step 6. Enter the NetBIOS name of the Active Directory domain server in the AD Server Name field.

Step 7. Enter the fully qualified domain name in the Domain field.

Step 8. (Optional) Enter the name of the organization in the Organization Unit field. This is used to classify objects located in directories and to differentiate between objects with the same name or to allow certain users authority to create and manage objects.

Step 9. Enter the username for the administrator in the Domain Administrator Username field.

Step 10. Enter the password for the administrator in the Domain Administrator Password field.

Step 11. (Optional) Click the Advanced Options tab to configure advanced settings.

Step 12. Check Automatically register in DNS to enable the registration of the NSS in the DNS Server.

Step 13. Click Apply to save the changes and join the domain.

Step 14. Click OK to close the window.

Step 15. Now users need to create a new shared folder and add permissions for domain users. To do this, refer to the article Configuration of Advanced Options in Shared Folders on NSS300 Series Smart Storage.

Step 16. For verification, try to access the shared folder from a local computer that is not in the domain. Technet is the name of the shared folder created in Step 13.

Step 17. Enter the domain credentials in the specified fields.

Step 18. After the user logs on, they will have access to the shared folder as shown in the following picture.
