Changing the operating mode from gateway to router affects how the router itself works. Gateway mode is used most often and should be used when this router is used for internet connections. This mode allows all devices on your LAN(Local Area Network) to share the same Internet (WAN) IP addresses. The router mode is less widely used and should only be used if you have another router on your network. This mode does not configure all the devices on your LAN network to have the same WAN(Wide Area Network) IP addresses. They must be changed individually to have the same IP address.
The objective of this document is to show you how to configure operation mode on the RVS4000.
Applicable Devices
• RVS4000
Configure Operation Mode
Step 1. Using a web browser, go to the device's IP address and and using the GUI choose Setup>Advanced Routing.
Step 2. Choose either Gateway or Router in the Operation Mode section to change the usage of the router.
Note: You will want the RVS4000 in Gateway mode if you are not nested behind another NAT device. Putting the device in Router mode disables NAT on the WAN interface. Also, if you plan to implement port forwarding, VPN and other services, you will need to terminate your WAN with a public IP address by setting the router to Gateway mode.
