Domain Name System Mail Exchanger Entry lookup via CLI on Cisco Spam & Virus Blocker

Objective

A Mail Exchanger (MX) entry in the Domain Name System (DNS) specifies the mail server responsible for accepting email messages on behalf of a recipient's domain and specifies how email should be routed. The MX record can be prioritized with a preference number that indicates the order in which the mail servers should be used. This enables the use of primary and backup mail servers, which makes mail delivery more reliable. This article explains how to look up the DNS MX entries via CLI on the Cisco Spam & Virus Blocker.

Applicable Devices

• Cisco Spam & Virus Blocker

DNS MX Entry Lookup

Step 1. On a Windows based operating system, choose Start > Accessories > Command Prompt.

Step 2. Enter the command nslookup in the Command Prompt window. Press Return. This displays all MX entries with their priority as well as the mail server hostname.

Step 3. Enter command nslookup <hostname> where the name of the mail server host is to be replaced in the <hostname> part of the command. Press Return. This resolves the hostname on the mail server and displays the matching IP address of the server.
