Cisco Small Business switches support a different series of SFP modules than the Catalyst switches. This article will give an overview of the SFP modules and how to interconnect Cisco Small Business switches with Cisco Catalyst switches with a optical link.
The Cisco Small Business SFP and Cisco traditional SFP is NOT interchangeable. That mean, you cannot use a Cisco Small Business SFP on Cisco Catalyst switch and vice versa. Cisco Small Business SFP will not be recognized by Cisco Catalyst switch and will not function; Cisco traditional SFP may be recognized by Cisco Small Business switches and function, but this deployment is not supported by Cisco.
Cisco Small Business switches support the following SFP module.
GE Transceivers | |
MGBSX1 | 1000BASE-SX SFP transceiver, for multimode fiber, 850 nm wavelength, support up to 550 m |
MGBLX1 | 1000BASE-LX SFP transceiver, for single-mode fiber, 1310 nm wavelength, support up to 10 km |
MGBLH1 | 1000BASE-LH SFP transceiver, for single-mode fiber, 1310 nm wavelength, support up to 40 km |
MGBBX1 | 1000BASE-BX-20U SFP transceiver, for single-mode fiber, 1310 nm wavelength, support up to 20 km |
MGBT1 | 1000BASE-T SFP transceiver for category 5 copper wire, support up to 100 m |
FE Transceivers | |
MFEFX1 | 100BASE-FX SFP transceiver, for multimode fiber, 1310 nm wavelength, support up to 2 km |
MFELX1 | 100BASE-LX SFP transceiver, for single-mode fiber, 1310 nm wavelength, support up to 10 km |
MFEBX1 | 100BASE-BX-20U SFP transceiver for single-mode fiber, 1310 nm wavelength, support up to 20 km |
Traditional Cisco products including Catalyst/ISR and other equipment support the following SFP.
GE Transceivers | |
GLC-SX-MM SFP-GE-S | Operates on 50 μm multimode fiber links up to 550 m and on 62.5 μm FDDI-grade multimode fibers up to 220 m. |
GLC-LH-SM SFP-GE-L | Operates on standard single-mode fiber-optic link spans of up to 10 km and up to 550 m on any multimode fibers. |
GLC-ZX-SM SFP-GE-Z | Operates on standard single-mode fiber-optic link spans of up to approximately 70 km in length. |
GLC-BX-D GLC-BX-U | Operates on a single strand of standard single-mode fiber. A 1000BASE-BX10-D device is always connected to a 1000BASE-BX10-U device with a single strand of standard single-mode fiber with an operating transmission range up to 10 km. |
GLC-T SFP-GE-T | 1000BASE-T SFP Transceiver Module for Category 5 copper wire. |
FE Transceivers | |
GLC-FE-100FX GLC-GE-100FX | Operates on ordinary multimode fiber-optic (MMF) link spans up to 2 kilometers long. GLC-FE-100FX, For 100Mbps Ethernet ports. GLC-GE-100FX, For Gigabit Ethernet ports. |
GLC-FE-100LX | Operates on ordinary single-mode fiber-optic (SMF) link spans up to 10 kilometers long. |
GLC-FE-100BX-D GLC-FE-100BX-U | Operates on ordinary SMF single-strand link spans up to 10 kilometers long. |
GLC-FE-100EX | Operates on ordinary single-mode fiber-optic (SMF) link spans up to 40 kilometers long. |
GLC-FE-100ZX | Operates on ordinary single-mode fiber-optic (SMF) link spans up to 80 kilometers long. |
To interconnect a Small Business switch with Cisco Catalyst switch, you need to use Cisco Small Business SFP on the Small Business switches, and Cisco traditional SFP on Catalyst switches. And the SFP on both sides should follow the same IEEE standard. The mapping table is shown below.
Cisco Small Business SFP | Cisco traditional SFP |
GE Transceiver | |
MGBSX1 | GLC-SX-MM SFP-GE-S |
MGBLX1 MGBLH1 | GLC-LH-SM |
MGBBX1 | GLC-BX-D |
MGBT1 | GLC-T SFP-GE-T |
FE Transceiver | |
MFEFX1 | GLC-FE-100FX GLC-GE-100FX |
MFELX1 | GLC-FE-100LX |
MFEBX1 | GLC-FE-100BX-D |

How about the small business switch transceivers compatibility with Nexus switches? Can we consider the same compatibility table mentioned above for catalyst switches for Nexus compatibility with SB switches.
Hi Anoopsisodia. Yes, the mapping table for connecting Cisco Small Business SFP and Cisco traditional SFP also applies to Nexus switch, as long as the Cisco traditional SFP is compatible with the Nexus switch. For more information on the compatibility between Cisco traditional SFP and Nexus switches, please refer to http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/interfaces_modules/transceiver_modules/compatibility/matrix/GE_Tx_Matrix.html
Thanks a lot Aaron. Much Appreciated!
