Monitor Host Performance with Internet Contol Message Protocol (ICMP) for a Device on Cisco OnPlus Portal

Objective

Event Monitors are mainly used to monitor the device in order to provide notifications to the technicians in a timely manner if there are any problems with the device performance. Testing in a network is done mainly to check the performance of the network. There are various tests which are available based on the monitors which are present in the device.

Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) is a protocol which is used is used to give feedback about the transmission of datagrams. Host Performance (ICMP) is a monitor which is mainly used to check the performance of the host and it uses IPv4 ICMP echo requests for this purpose.

This article explains the steps of how to monitor Host Performance with the help of ICMP on a device connected to OnPlus and gives the test results. This monitor is for any connected device except the OnPlus Network Agent, such as security appliances, switches, and so on.

Applicable Devices

• ON100

Software Version

• v7.6.2.038

Monitor Host Performance with ICMP

Step 1. Log in to the Cisco OnPlus Portal, click the desired customer, and choose Dashboard.

Step 2. Move the mouse over the desired device from the Network Topology view and click the Device Information icon. The Settings window appears.

Step 3. Click the Monitors tab. The Monitors page opens. For each monitor, three icons are available. The first icon gives information about the particular monitor, the second icon is used test the monitor, and the third icon is used to indicate whether the monitor is enabled or not. Make sure the monitor is enabled before the testing is done. Please refer to the article Enable or Disable Device Monitors on OnPlus 100 and follow the steps for this device to enable a monitor for this device if it is not enabled.

Step 4. If the Host Performance monitor was not added before, click the Add icon and choose Host Performance (ICMP) from the drop-down list.

Step 5. Click the Host Performance (ICMP) monitor which is the monitor to be tested. It consists of four fields associated with Latency and Loss.

Note: A Warning or a Critical event is generated if the response time of the host crosses the thresholds which are specified for  latency and packet loss. If the host is completely unresponsive a Critical event will also be generated.

Step 6. Enter the warning and critical values (in ms) in the Latency Warning and Latency Critical fields respectively. Latency is the network delay caused between when the packet was sent and when the reply was received.

Step 7. Enter the warning and critical values (in %) in the Loss Warning and Loss Critical fields respectively. Loss is the percentage of packet losses which have occurred.

Step 8. Click Test Monitor to test the Host Performance (ICMP) monitor. A new page opens.

Step 9. (Optional) Check Generate an Event to allow a real event to be created that reflects the result of the test. If a delivery rule is created for this event already then the event is delivered based on that rule.

Step 10. Click Run in the Run Test field to run the test. The results are shown.

Step 11. (Optional) Click the Back icon to return to the previous page to make changes as needed.

Step 12. Click OK to close the window.
