Monitor Web Services on a Device on Cisco OnPlus Portal

Objective

Event Monitors are mainly used to monitor the device in order to provide notifications to the technicians in a timely manner if there are any problems with the device performance. Testing in a network is done mainly to check the performance of the network. There are various tests which are available based on the monitors which are present in the device.

Web Service Monitors are used to monitor some of the services which are provided by the Web. It is used to check whether the performance of the Web services such as Web Server (HTTP), Secure Web Server (HTTPS), and SSL Certificate (HTTPS) perform as they are expected.

This article explains the steps of how to monitor Web service (HTTP), Secure Web service (HTTPS), and SSL Certificate (HTTPS) on a device connected to an OnPlus 100 and gives the test results. These monitors are for any connected device except the OnPlus Network Agent itself.

Monitor Web Services

Step 1. Log in to the Cisco OnPlus Portal, click the desired customer, and choose Dashboard.

Step 2. Move the mouse over the desired device from the Network Topology view and click the Device Information icon. The Settings window appears.

Step 3. Click the Monitors tab. For each monitor, three icons are available. The first icon gives information about the particular monitor, the second icon is used test the monitor, and the third icon is used to indicate whether the monitor is enabled or not. Make sure the monitor is enabled before the testing is done. Please refer to the article Enable or Disable Device Monitors on OnPlus 100 and follow the steps to enable a monitor for this device if it is not enabled.

Monitor Secure Web Server (HTTPS)

This monitor is used to monitor the secure Web service at an URL which is specified and is used to guarantee that there is a response and it responds with the given text string.

Step 1. If the Secure Web Service monitor was not added before, click the Add icon and choose Secure Web Service (HTTPS) from the drop-down list.

Step 2. Click the Secure Web Service (HTTPS) monitor which is the monitor to be tested.

Step 3. Enter the HTTPS port number in the Port field. The default port number for HTTPS is 443.

Step 4. The URL of the device on which the monitor is tested will already be shown as default. A desired name without a space can be entered for the URL.

Step 5. Enter the text string which needs to be present in the page that is returned in the Find field. By default, the text string is present in the page itself.

Note: A Critical event is generated if the service at the given URL is unreachable or the reply does not have the string which is specified.

Step 6. Click Test Monitor to test the Secure Web Service monitor. A new page opens.

Step 7. (Optional) Click Generate an Event to allow a real event to be created that reflects the result of the test. If a delivery rule is created for this event already then the event is delivered based on that rule.

Step 8. Click Run in the Run Test field to run the test. The results are shown.

Step 9. Click the Back icon to return to the previous page to make changes as needed.

Step 10. Click OK to close the window.

Monitor SSL Certificate (HTTPS)

SSL certificates are usually exchanged between the client and the server for confidentiality. This monitor is used to monitor the SSL certificate of the Web server for the given host and to guarantee that the certificate is valid and not outdated.

Step 1. If the SSL Certificate (HTTPS) monitor was not added before, click the Add icon and choose SSL Certificate (HTTPS) from the drop-down list.

Step 2. Click the SSL Certificate (HTTPS) monitor which is the monitor to be tested.

Step 3. Enter the hostname of the destination server whose SSL certificate needs to be checked in the Target DNS HostName field. If this field is left blank, the host name is checked based on the IP address of the device.

Step 4. Enter the HTTPS port number in the Port field. The default port number is 443.

Step 5. Enter the number of days before the SSL certificate expires that you wish to receive a warning in the Warn if days until expiration less than field.

Note: A Warning event is generated if the certificate expires in less than the number of days which are specified. A Critical event is generated if a valid certificate cannot be obtained from the host or the certificate has expired.

Step 6. Click Test Monitor to test the SSL Certificate monitor. A new page opens.

Step 7. (Optional) Click Generate an Event to allow a real event to be created that reflects the result of the test. If a delivery rule is created for this event already then the event is delivered based on that rule.

Step 8. Click Run in the Run Test field to run the test. The results are shown.

Step 9. Click the Back icon to return to the previous page to make changes as needed.

Step 10. Click OK to close the window.

Monitor Web Server (HTTP)

This monitor is used to monitor the web service at an URL which is specified and is used to guarantee that there is a response and it responds with the given text string.

Step 1. If the Web Service monitor was not added before, click the Add icon and choose Web Service (HTTP) from the drop-down list.

Step 2. Click the Web Service (HTTP) monitor which is the monitor to be tested.

Step 3. Enter the HTTP port number in the Port field. The default port number for HTTP is 80.

Step 4. The URL of the device on which the monitor is tested will already be shown as default. A desired name without space can be entered for the URL if needed.

Step 5. Enter the text string which needs to present in the page that is returned in the Find field. The text string to be returned is html.

Note: A Critical event is generated if the service at the given URL is unreachable or the reply does not have the string which is specified.

Step 6. Click Test Monitor to test the Web Service monitor. A new page opens.

Step 7. (Optional) Click Generate an Event to allow a real event to be created that reflects the result of the test. If a delivery rule is created for this event already then the event is delivered based on that rule.

Step 8. Click Run in the Run Test field to run the test. The results are shown.
