Password Reset on Cisco Spam & Virus Blocker

Objective

Users can change their passwords in case of loss of password for the device. A temporary password is received from the Customer Support Engineer when the Serial Number of the device is provided. This article explains how to reset the password of the blocker through the setup wizard.

Password Reset Steps

Step 1. Contact Customer Support for a temporary password. You will need the Serial Number of the device. A temporary password will be given. 

Step 2. Connect a laptop (or other client device) to the serial port on the back of the unit using a standard 9-pin null modem cable.

Step 3. Launch a preferred serial console client to access the Cisco Spam & Virus Blocker device via a serial connection.

Step 4. Enter a desired baud rate for the connected device in the Speed (baud) field. Speed/ Baud rate is a measure of how fast data is moving between devices used for the communication.

Step 5. Enter the desired number of data bits for the connected device in the Data bits field. It is the number of data bits used to encode a character.

Step 6. Enter the desired number of bits needed to stop the communication with the connected device in the Stop Bits field.

Step 7. Choose the desired parity type for the connected device from the Parity drop-down list. The parity bit is added to ensure that the number of bits with the value of one is even or odd.

Step 8. Choose the desired type of flow control from the Flow control drop-down list. This helps manage the rate of data transmission between two devices to prevent speed mismatches between sender and receiver.

Step 9. Click Open. A command line interface window opens.

Step 10. Once the session has been established, press Enter to trigger output.

Step 11. A login prompt appears. Log in with username 'adminpassword'. The password is the temporary password received from the Customer Support Engineer. Then press Enter.

Step 12. Enter the new password that will be used for the 'admin' user. The password is reset.
