Setup Wizard on the RV180 VPN Router

Objective

The RV180 features a setup wizard that allows an user to quickly configure the basic settings on the router. This article explains how to run the setup wizard for the RV180 VPN Router.

Steps of Procedure

Dynamic IP Address (DHCP)

A dynamic IP address is an IP address that changes each time a devices reboots. This allows devices to share IP addresses when accessing the Internet. This procedure explains how to set connection type of the router to dynamic IP address in the Setup Wizard.

Step 1. Use the web configuration utility to choose Run Setup Wizard from the menu on the left. The Router Setup Wizard appears.

Step 2. Click Next. The router takes several minutes to check the network connection

Step 3. After the router checks the network connection, click Next.

Step 4. For the connection type of the router, click the Dynamic IP Address (DHCP) radio button.

Step 5. Click Next.

Step 6. From the Time Zone drop-down menu, choose a time zone for the router.

Step 7. Perform one of the following.

• To synchronize with the time of the network, click the Enable network time synchronization radio button.

• To set the date and time manually, click the Set date and time manually radio button and choose the date and time from the Date and Time drop-down menus.

• To import the date and time from the computer, click the here hyperlink and time and date of the computer are chosen in the time and date drop-down menus.

Step 8. Click Next.

Step 9. To set the MAC address for the router, click a radio button.

• Use Default Address — This option uses the default MAC address of the router.

• Use This Computer's Address — This option sets the MAC address of the router to be the MAC address of the computer.

• Use This Address — This option allows you to enter a MAC address for the router in the adjacent field.

Step 10. Click Submit.

Step 11. Click Next.

Step 12. In the Router Password field, enter a password for the router.

Step 13. In the Confirm Password field, retype the password.

Step 14. (Optional) Check the Disable Password Strength Enforcement checkbox to disable password requirements.

Step 15. Click Submit.

Step 16. Click Finish.

Static IP Address

A static IP address is an IP address that does not change. This makes the IP address for the device easier to know. This procedure explains how to set connection type of the router to static IP address in the Setup Wizard.

Step 1. Use the web configuration utility to choose Run Setup Wizard from the menu on the left. The Router Setup Wizard appears.

Step 2. Click Next. The router takes several minutes to check the network connection

Step 3. After the router checks the network connection, click Next.

Step 4. For the connection type of the router, click the Static IP Address (DHCP) radio button.

Step 5. Click Next.

Step 6. In the Static IP Address field, enter the IP address for the router.

Step 7. In the Subnet Mask field, enter the subnet mask for the router.

Step 8. In the Gateway IP field, enter the IP address for the gateway.

Step 9. In the DNS field, enter the IP address for a Domain Name Server (DNS).

Step 10. (Optional) In the Secondary DNS field, enter the IP address for a secondary DNS.

Step 11. Click Next.

Step 12. From the Time Zone drop-down menu, choose a time zone for the router.

Step 13. Perform one of the following.

• To synchronize with the time of the network, click the Enable network time synchronization radio button.

• To set the date and time manually, click the Set date and time manually radio button and choose the date and time from the Date and Time drop-down menus.

• To import the date and time from the computer, click the here hyperlink and time and date of the computer are chosen in the time and date drop-down menus.

Step 14. Click Next.

Step 15. To set the MAC address for the router, click a radio button.

• Use Default Address — This option uses the default MAC address of the router.

• Use This Address — This option allows you to enter a MAC address for the router in the adjacent field.

Step 16. Click Submit.

Step 17. Click Next.

PPPoE

Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) is a protocol that connects two points over Ethernet. This procedure explains how to set connection type of the router to PPPoE in the Setup Wizard.

Step 1. Use the web configuration utility to choose Run Setup Wizard from the menu on the left. The Router Setup Wizard appears.

Step 2. Click Next. The router takes several minutes to check the network connection

Step 3. After the router checks the network connection, click Next.

Step 4. For the connection type of the router, click the PPPoE radio button.

Step 5. Click Next.

Step 6. In the Account Name field, enter the name of the PPPoE account.

Step 7. In the Password field, enter a password for the PPPoE account.

Step 8. In the Confirm Password field, retype the password for the PPPoE account.

Step 9. Click Next.

Step 10. From the Time Zone drop-down menu, choose a time zone for the router.

Step 11. Perform one of the following.

• To synchronize with the time of the network, click the Enable network time synchronization radio button.

• To set the date and time manually, click the Set date and time manually radio button and choose the date and time from the Date and Time drop-down menus.

• To import the date and time from the computer, click the here hyperlink and time and date of the computer are chosen in the time and date drop-down menus.

Step 12. Click Next.

Step 13. To set the MAC address for the router, click a radio button.

PPTP

Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is a protocol that sends encapsulated PPP packets through isolated channels. This procedure explains how to set connection type of the router to PPTP in the Setup Wizard.

Step 1. Use the web configuration utility to choose Run Setup Wizard from the menu on the left. The Router Setup Wizard appears.

Step 2. Click Next. The router takes several minutes to check the network connection

Step 3. After the router checks the network connection, click Next.

Step 4. For the connection type of the router, click the PPTP radio button.

Step 5. Click Next.

Step 6. In the Account Name field, enter a name for the PPTP account.

Step 7. In the Password field, enter a password for the PPTP account.

Step 8. In the Confirm Password field, retype a password for the PPTP account.

Step 9. In the My IP Address field, enter your IP address.

Step 10. In the Server IP Address field, enter an IP address for the PPTP server.

Step 11. Click Next.

Step 12. From the Time Zone drop-down menu, choose a time zone for the router.

Step 13. Perform one of the following.

• To synchronize with the time of the network, click the Enable network time synchronization radio button.

• To set the date and time manually, click the Set date and time manually radio button and choose the date and time from the Date and Time drop-down menus.

• To import the date and time from the computer, click the here hyperlink and time and date of the computer are chosen in the time and date drop-down menus.

Step 14. Click Next.

Step 15. To set the MAC address for the router, click a radio button.

Step 21. Click Sumbit.

Step 22. Click Finish.

L2TP

Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) is a newer version of PPTP. This procedure explains how to set connection type of the router to L2TP in the Setup Wizard.

Step 1. Use the web configuration utility to choose Run Setup Wizard from the menu on the left. The Router Setup Wizard appears.

Step 2. Click Next. The router takes several minutes to check the network connection

Step 3. After the router checks the network connection, click Next.

Step 4. For the connection type of the router, click the L2TP radio button.

Step 5. Click Next.

Step 6. In the Account Name field, enter a name for the L2TP account.

Step 7. In the Password field, enter a password for the L2TP account.

Step 8. In the Confirm Password field, retype a password for the L2TP account.

Step 9. In the My IP Address field, enter your IP address.

Step 10. In the Server IP Address field, enter an IP address for the L2TP server.

Step 11. Click Next.

Step 12. From the Time Zone drop-down menu, choose a time zone for the router.

Step 13. Perform one of the following.

• To synchronize with the time of the network, click the Enable network time synchronization radio button.

• To set the date and time manually, click the Set date and time manually radio button and choose the date and time from the Date and Time drop-down menus.

• To import the date and time from the computer, click the here hyperlink and time and date of the computer are chosen in the time and date drop-down menus.

Step 14. Click Next.
