Objectives
Nearly all desktop computers have an Ethernet port for connecting to a wired network, but most do not have a wireless network adapter to connect wirelessly to a network. A computer can connect to the WET200 through an Ethernet port and use the WET200 as a wireless network adapter to connect wirelessly to a network.
This article details how to use the WET200 as a wireless adapter on a computer.
Applicable Devices
• WET200
Connecting to the WET200
Step 1. Set the IP address on the computer to a static IP address.
Note: Most routers use 192.168.1.1 as the default IP address, and the WEP200 uses 192.168.1.226 as the default IP address. Do not set the static IP address on the computer to either of these IP addresses.
Step 2. Connect an Ethernet cable from the Ethernet port on the computer to one of the Ethernet ports on the WET200.
Configuring the WET200 as a Wireless Adapater
Step 1. Access the Web based graphical user interface of the WET200 by entering the IP address of the device into a Web browser. Choose Wireless > Basic Settings. The Basic Wireless Settings page opens.
Note: The default IP address of the WET200 is 192.168.1.226 and the default username and password are both admin.
Step 2. To search for and configure the wireless network to connect the WET200 to, click Site Survey. A pop-up window for the Site Survey page appears.
Step 3. In the Site Survey window, click the radio button next to the wireless network to connect to. The Wireless Security page opens within the pop-up window.
Step 4. If there is encryption or authentication on the wireless network, enter in the necessary security information for that wireless network. Click Save to have the WET200 to immediately reboot and connect to the chosen wireless network. The pop-up window closes.
Note: If there is neither encryption nor authentication on the chosen wireless network, there will be no security information to enter, just click Save.
Step 5. Wait a few minutes for the device to restart. The Basic Wireless Settings page will open when complete.
Step 6. Select the wireless mode of the network that the WET200 will be connecting to wirelessly from the Mode drop-down list. If the wireless mode of the network is unknown, make sure that B/G Mixed is selected from the Mode drop-down list.
Note: Selecting Disabled from the Mode drop-down list will prevent the WET200 from wirelessly connecting to any network.
Step 7. Select the type of the network that the WET200 will be connecting to from the Network Type drop-down list. The options are:
• Infrastructure — The WET200 is connecting to a network through a router or an access point.
• Ad-hoc — The WET200 is connecting to a network composed of devices directly communicating wirelessly without the use of access points.
– Select the wireless channel that the Ad-hoc network is communicating on from the Channel drop-down list. If the channel is unknown, make sure that Auto is selected from Channel drop-down list.
Step 8. Click Save to have the WET200 immediately restart and connect to the wireless network with the given settings.
Step 9. (Optional) To specify the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS server for the WET200 to use, choose Setup > Basic Setup and then configure those settings. Click Save to have the WET200 immediately restart and for the settings go into immediate effect.
