Hi,
It is not a direct upgrade. It is a multi hop upgrade from 5.x to 6.x and then to 7.x in general. Additionally, from the following link:

“When upgrading DCNM between major releases, 5.(x) > 6.(x), provision a new database for DCNM as database schema changes between these releases. Reusing a database from a previous major DCNM release can have unpredictable results on DCNM software. DCNM database structures created by different major releases are not interoperable. Supported upgrades within the same major release do not require a new database installation.”
So, a fresh install of 7.x may be a better solution here. Prior to, you could can gather Fabric's seed device IP’s and credentials since Data Sources would need to be added after the install completes. Typically one needs all switch credentials to match within a Fabric when adding into DCNM. And as well the CLI/SSH credentials and the SNMPv3 credentials should match on each device.
(when you add a CLI username/password on MDS, it usually automatically adds the same SNMPv3 with credentails)
If you have a relatively small number of switches/fabrics, you may be able to just use the default internal Postgres DB. But for larger deployments with critical production areas, they recommend an external Oracle DB, which requires setup/prep before DCNM is installed.
