ESW-540-24 Initial configuration

Just preparing to set up our companies server room, using the ESW-540-24 switch the electrician who wired the room sold us with it, and if we factory reset the switch and then direct connect to port 1 with a system we can login to the ESW-540, but every time we try to apply any IP address settings, we lose access to the cisco.  Not the obvious "it's address changed so you have to go to the new address" but "use 192.168.5.1 instead of .1.1" and neither .1.1 nor .5.1 will work.  DHCP was autodetected and connection was lost but we could not find the IP address it was using.  We have a firewall between the ESW-540 and the ISP router (forced to use an ISP-provided paired combo modem and router that feeds our firewall which then feeds the switch for the server room).  I have the manuals, but the standard printed process is failing due to either our lack of experience or perhaps being sold a bad device.

Any examples would be welcome, such as:

"If ISP device with no customer-facing login is at 192.168.1.1, and firewall is using a static IP of 10.24.52.64 for DHCP, with DHCP range set for 192.168.5.100-192.168.5.254, set the Cisco static IP to x, then apply ang log back into it there."
