Interswitch VLAN routing SG300 - Netgear GS108V2

Hi,

I've just managed to get my Cisco switch configured correctly with all required VLANs with help from Tom on the board.

I however want to further expand my network within my house and have a spare Netgear GS108V2 which I'm will attach to the Cisco SG300.

My current setup is as follows

My setup is detailed below:-

I have a dryatek 2860n router which is my gateway to the internet setup on IP 192.168.1.1

My Cisco switch has been configured on 192.168.1.2 and setup to use Layer 3.

The VLANS I have configured are as follows

VLAN 1	192.168.1.x/24				Default / Internet Uplink
VLAN 12	10.0.12.x/24				Workstations
VLAN 13	10.0.13.x/24				Server MGMT Interface
VLAN 14	10.0.14.x/24				Server Public Interface
VLAN 15	10.0.15.x/24				Server Private Interface
VLAN 20	10.0.20.x/24				Storage

The Cisco switch is also providing DHCP for my Workstations that use VLAN12 and have access to all the other VLANS which my Servers and Storage run on.

What I want to do is epxand the network further adding more workstations that will be attached to the Netgear switch which will have an uplink to the Cisco switch.

I'm just not quite sure how I go about doing this, how i need to configure the port the netgear will attach to and what configuration I need to make on the Netgear.  I take it this will just act as a Layer 2 switch and all the routing will actually be done by the Cisco Layer 3 switch.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi Paul, looking at the NetGear switches data sheet

This looks to be an unmanaged switch. If that's the case, the switch shouldn't understand VLANs, meaning which port you choose should be untagged on the desired VLAN and every connecting client will be a member of that VLAN only.

So if you want everything on VLAN 12, on the SX300 switch you'd make it an access port VLAN 12 untagged.

Hi Tom,

The model I have is

It mentions that it does support VLANS and Layer 3 Prioritisation whatever that is.

Not sure if that makes any difference?

Hi Paul, that being the case, what traffic do you want on that Netgear switch? Workstation VLAN 12 traffic or more? Essentially, if it's just the VLAN 12 traffic, you'd make an untagged port on the SX300 and connect the Netgear switch to that port. If you want more than 1 VLAN on the Netgear switch then the SX300 needs a trunk with the additional VLANs tagged to the VLAN 1, so something like 1 untagged, 12 tagged, 15 tagged, etc... if that was your desire to have VLAN 15 also present. While the Netgear would have to match exactly.
