SG500 MP 52 port switch do 10 GB?

donmatlock1

Can the above named switch do 10 GB fibre multimode without issue?

I am thinking of using this module, tech specs look like it will work:

https://www.cdw.ca/shop/products/StarTech.com-Cisco-Meraki-MA-SFP-10GB-SR-Compatible-10GBase-SR-SFP-MM-LC/4450074.aspx?pfm=srh

In this switch:

Thank you in advance

Hello DonMatlock1;

Thanks for using the community and entrusting your peers.

Heres the data sheet for the SG500:

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/small-business-500-series-stackable-managed-switches/c78-695646_data_sheet.html

and as you can see here are the compatible 10g MM SFPs:

i will have to verify if the Meraki SFP has been officially tested and approved. I susspect it has, but clearly not before this publication.

Sorry for this late question, but it looks the previous reply doesn't really answer the question.

In the documentation link given above we have those information regarding compatible 10g MM SFPs. But few pages before, most of SG500 (mine is SG500-28) is said to be handling 1G/5G through SFP. So even if those SFP manage 10G, what will be the link speed negotiated using those SFP: 10G or 5G? Does the other side NIC need to support 5G speed has well? Or will 10G works?

So, in this case, does SG500 switch do 10 GB with SFP?

Hi there,

In your case with the SG500-28 you do have 2 combo GE + 2 1G/5G SFP ports where you can use 5G SFPs, the so-called SFP+DAC Twinax Cable (SFP-H10GB-CU1M, SFP-H10GB-CU3M or SFP-H10GB-CU5M) for stacking purposes. See datasheet in Supported SFP/SFP+ modules section. Your switch does not support 10G SFPs, but only 1G and 5G which are listed models in the product datasheet. https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/small-business-500-series-stackable-managed-switches/c78-695646_data_sheet.html

Only SG500X and SG500XG have 10G/SFP+ ports.

Hope that helps

No it doesn't help so much.

The PDF version of the document you refer to (https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/small-business-500-series-stackable-managed-switches/c78-695646_data_sheet.pdf) states page 14 and 15 the compatible SFP modules:

Supported SFP/SFP+ Modules

Note: Gigabit (MGBxxx) and 10-Gigabit (SFP-xxx) modules also work in the SG500XG-8F8T Ten Gigabit switch model.

In this list, there is no distinction for the 3 last ones regarding SG500X or SG500 with 2 combo GE + 2 1G/5G SFP and others.

So, is the datasheet wrong? If not, what happen if one of those 10G fiber module is used (requirements/5G/10G) with SG500 ? If never tried, can anyone at Cisco test it and say?

Hi,

As we know SG500 doesn't support 10GbE Fibre. Check the guide for more info (Page 66/67):

tp://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/csbms/Sx500/administration_guide/500_Series_Admin_Guide.pdf

The copper modules will work perfectly fine for the 5 gig slots up to the available wire length. A 1 gig fiber module such as MGBSX1 is  more suitable for 550 meter or less multi mode solution if the distance  exceeds the length of the copper or ethernet.

Less than 200 meters is ambiguous distance and there are 2 or 3 correct answers. If this is within 30 feet let's say then the 5 gig is  an exceptional choice. If it will be outside of the 30 feet then another solution such as a multimode fiber using MGBSX1 will do the trick for a 1 gig link for 550 meters. Running regular Cat6 can also do this trick for distance less than 100 meter. Or for a different approach, MGBT1 using Cat6 which is an ethernet module

Hi,

Good point, the administration guide is clearer than the technical
specification document. The one I found here:
https://community.cisco.com/kxiwq67737/attachments/kxiwq67737/5976-discussions-small-business-switches/7615/1/139052-500_Series_Admin_Guide.pdf
states pages 65 to 67 that SFP-10G-SR is not supported on SG500.

So I have a question regarding twinax or DAC cable. The 5G limitation
comes from SFP vs SFP+ (that supports above 5G rate).

If I connect a H10GB-CU3M – Copper Cable between SG500 and a NIC
supporting SFP/SFP+ DAC on a VMware ESXi, what will happen. How speed
negotiation is handled by SG500. Has this 5G ability something to do
with NBase-T or nothing to do? On the NIC side, should I force the speed
to 5G, or will they autonegotiate to 5G? Or, is this a full proprietary
feature and it will never be possible to get 5G with something other
than a Cisco SG family switch?
