Strange Error on Switch

Hi Guys,

Last week and just yesterday, our switch SG200 50/50 logged an error like this:

%CDP-E-MALFORMED_TLV: CDP message from 88:43:e1:ab:66:f8 cached with illegal Appliance VLAN-ID TLV

At the time of the error, the SA520 router's LAN Port 1 where the SG200 Port 49 connected went down. (Light is OFF)

So internet is down and other VLANS are disconnected.

The MAC address on the log is the SA520 router. This happens 2x now and it needs for me to reboot both switch and router.

and goes back again online.

Any ideas because this causing us downtime. Many Thanks

Hi AC

Release notes on version 1.1.1.8  say the following problem was correct

.

If the switch receives a CDP packet with a mal-formed Appliance VLAN ID TLV from its neighbor, it will crash when it is queried for its CDP neighbor information from XML, SNMP, GUI, and CLI. The switch stores the CDP neighbor information in its CDP Cache Table.   Known devices that sent out malformed Appliance VLAN ID TLV CDP packets are Cisco SA520, SA520W, SA540

Are you running firmware version 1.1.1.8 or just have it loaded on a non-active area of the switch ?

I would suggest if, you are really running 1.1.1.8, you contact the good folk at the Small Business Support center via the following.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/support/tsd_cisco_small_business_support_center_contacts.html

or try online chat at;

https://supportforums.cisco.com/community/netpro/small-business/sbproductwarranty/proswitchsupport/c2c

I guess you have the option of disabling CDP, if it's not needed, you have some choices.

Hi David,

Thanks for your reply, our switch and router been working ok but this error happened only last week.

Yes the switch firmware is 1.1.1.8. I called the Cisco Support and they sent me a replacement for the SA520.

They recommend to configure it again rather copying the back up config file because they said it might also be a corrupted config file. So I did configure it again, update and when I plug it in the network...a new and same error log on the switch.

They recommend to turn OFF both CDP and Bonjour in both devices but right now some devices connected to SG200 switch can be ping by other machine and some are not. There is something not right on this switch.

Thanks.

AC

Hi AC,

I think the technician was too quick to replace the SA520, i think he may not have seen the release note.

But from the positive side,  it demonstrates that we backup our products with a excellent warranty.

I think you should ask the good folk at the SBSC to help resolve the ping issue, even though I think it may not be my problem.

regards Dave

Hi David,

Just to update everyone on this. The network seems ok after disabling the CDP on the SA520 and on the switch port 49

that is connected to the Port 1 of the SA520.

However, just to make sure everything shoud be fine, engineer will connect via Webex and look at the router and switch configuration in our network.

That's all for the moment.

Many Thanks.
