Upgrade IOS - Need space

Hi, looking to upgrade IOS image on a 3560, switch in question has no space.

What is the implication of deleting the current c3560-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE6 directory?

Can we then copy the new .bin to the root and use a 'boot system..." command 

or

Is there an archival operation we should be performing to remove the old image set?
