I have someone that wants me to do some setup and maintenance on their 5 2960 switches. They gave me a user name and password but they only work for the web gui, so I can log in there, but it's extremely limited in what it can do. I see options to turn telnet off or on or to set a telnet password. One of the five switches I can successfully telnet into, but when I attempt to reach the others, they're asking for a user name and password. The credentials provided by the customer that work for the web gui do not work for telnet or SSH. Is there a way to gain access to the cli to be able to do what I need to with the resources I have? The switches are over 700 miles away, so plugging into the console isn't an option and I'm pretty confident that the customer doesn't have any additional information since someone else set this up for them.
Thanks,

You could get the customer to plug into the console port locally with a pc that's on the local network then RDP to his pc or teamviewer or any type of screen view control application and then do password recovery over his PC , you will loose connection while switch reboots but as long as you do it right it will come backup with full config and passwords removed
Or get him to adhoc his 3g/4g phone connection to a laptop and then console from laptop to the switch , that way your coming in over a separate network and will have full control though the whole recovery procedure
just an option I have had to do it before for remote site

Fortunately it was much easier. We downloaded the Cisco Network Assistant. Upon logging into the switches with the web gui info, it let us go in and create new users which allowed us to log in.
