Hello,

which phones do you have, what brand/model ? Post the output of:

show power inline

Does random ports mean the port never works, or sometimes does work, and sometimes doesn't work ?

Hi George,

The phones are Mitel 6920.

I can plug this into different ports but and have the issue but occasionally they do power up.

This is the show power inline output

Interface   Admin   Oper    Power  Device           Class      Max
(Watts)
--------- ------ ---------- ------- ------------------- ----- ----

Gi5/0/1   auto   off        0.0             n/a                 n/a   30.0

This is what it will show if working

Interface   Admin   Oper    Power  Device           Class      Max
(Watts)
--------- ------ ---------- ------- ------------------- ----- ----

Gi5/0/18    auto     on         5.0     Aquarius            2        30.0

Sounds to me like you have a bad PoE controller. We catch stuff like that all the time when testing here. If by chance you bought it from us, you'll have a lifetime warranty and we can replace it for you. Check your warranty with who you bought it from if not. You COULD have a bad cable or bad phone but I am assuming that you are using different cables and phones each time.

Put the phone back into port Gi 5/0/1 and do the following:

  1. Command:  test cable tdr interface Gi 5/0/1;
  2. Wait for approximately 5 to 7 seconds;
  3. Command: sh cable tdr interface Gi 5/0/1; and
  4. Post the complete output to #3

Hi Leo,

I have run that test, output is below

Interface Speed Local pair Pair length Remote pair Pair status
--------- ----- ---------- ------------------ ----------- --------------------
Gi5/0/1 auto  Pair A 2 +/- 10 meters N/A Open
                     Pair B 2 +/- 10 meters N/A Open
                     Pair C 2 +/- 10 meters N/A Open
                     Pair D 2 +/- 10 meters N/A Open

TDR output is showing the interface is down because there is nothing connected at the far end (OPEN).
Are you sure this is the correct port?

What happens if you connect the phone(s) directly to the port of the switch?

It's connected directly to the port when I ran the test.

The TDR result shows a cable length of about 10 metres but nothing else.

Hello

Do these random ports differ in their configuration to the port that do work? - Such has spanning tree portfast being enable or cdp/lldp
