3120 switch IOS update

I have a 6509 router connected to a 3120 switch. The switch is running version 12.2(0.0951)se3 IOS and I was to upgrade to 12.2(55)se IOS. How do I upgrade and set up vlans on the switch.

I tried to tftp a .bin file on the 3120 but got a checksum

error..  The switch is currently running a .bin file.

does the switch only accept a .tar file?

You can use a bin file.  Tar file is usually for switches that are stacked

Make sure you have enough space in flash

When I run the upgrade I get the below error.

I have the image file im my tftp directory

%Tar checking error in tftp://10.8.1.106/cbs31x0-universalk9-mz.122-55.se.bin

%Error:opening flash:update/info (No such file or directory)

%error: Image is not a valid IOS image archive.
