3750 E and X wont stack.

Hi,

Im wondering if anyone can see if I did any fault or if I just missed something.

Im trying to stack 2 3750E-24PD-S and 2 3750X-12S-S. The 2 3750E finds eachother and stacks with one master as they should. The problem is that and the 3750X does the exact same thing instead of joining the 3750E stack.

Both runs the same IOS (c3750e-ipbasek9-mz.122-58.SE2).

The stackingcables are connected like following atm (I tried booting up the switches one at a time and all at once, no difference in the result):

3750E 1 4

3750E 1 2

3750X 2 3

3750X 3 4

I have also tried with:

3750E 4 1

3750E 1 2

3750X 2 3

3750X 3 4

3750E 1 4

3750E 2 1

3750X 3 2

3750X 4 3

I read the following links and some forums and (as much as I can see) everything is correctly configured and connected. But since it still wont work Im wondering what I am missing.

First of all what does your logs tell you ?

are the cables correctly connected in the back of them ?

if all things else is correct I think there is a thing with the SDM template in the 12S switches.

I have not personally come across this.

but i think i have seen somewhere that you need to change the SDM template for the 12S switches to the same as the 3750E switches. since the 12s has a template that no other 3750 switch has.

If you want it done right, it's got to be stacked like this:

3750E      1      2

3750E      2      3

3750X      3      4

3750X      4      1

Next, let's say you want the 3750E to be master, right?  Ok, power down the two 3750X, attach the stacking cable and then power up the 3750X one-at-a-time and in-the-order-of-your-stack.

Before the power up, console into the 3750E and the 3750X and post the entire bootup process of the 3750X and the stack joining process from the 3750E master.

I changed back the stacking cables to the setting that leolaohoo said.

Then I checked logs etc.

SDM looks to be the same.

But what Ive found is 2 things.

• 1 I have a major version missmatch, even though I run the same ios image (read that if I have the same ios image this shouldnt be an issue). However the X series using 6.46 and the E series using 1.46.
  

• 2 Could this be an an issue. The license level. Both 3750 are bought with IPbase license. But when I run the commands sh ver and sh license all on the 2 I get the following:

Looks fine to me.  Both 3750E and 3750X are running the same IOS and feature set.

Hello,

The global stack cabling has been validated, the sdm (show sdm prefer) is the same, the IOS as well 12.2(58)SE2.

However there is a condition when mixing stacks (in this case 3750-X with 3750-E correspond to mixed hardware stack)

The Cisco Catalyst 3750-X Series Switches with LAN Base feature set can only stack with other Cisco Catalyst 3750-X Series LAN Base switches.

A mixed stack of LAN Base switch with IP Base or IP Services features set is not supported.

Also, when looking at the show license output for the 3750X, ipbase feature is Active but not in use.

Although the 3750-X have the ipbase license Active (but not in Use), it explains why we notice a major version mismatch (6.46 for the X corresponds to lanbase – 1.46 for the E for ipbase). Thus the 3750X stacks only together (consequently E stack together).

Can you try to issue on both 3750X the command license boot level ipbase , save the config, reload the switches and test again ?

Thanks all for the help.

Apparently I had to use the universal ios image to get the ipbase license valid and in use on the 3750X series. Using the ipbase ios image didnt work.

On the 3750E it didnt matter if I used the universal or ipbase, it is valid as ipbase regardless.

I also heard that Cisco wants to use the Universal image for all 3750's and that the 3750E maybe wasnt inline just yet, and that was why the ipbase worked on that series.

This is what our technical support that is a cisco partner told me anyway.

However now everything stacks and works perfect
