3750 Mixed Stack (3750G-12S and 3750E-24TD-S) Firmware

Hi guys,

I have a stack with those 3750 switches.

3750E-24TD-S is running the universal c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-35.SE9.bin

3750G-12S is running the IPbase c3750-ipbasek9-mz.122-35.SE9.bin

As I want to add another 3750G-12S, that is already running c3750e-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE9.bin,

to the stack I would like to upgrade the firmware on the existing switches.

I can't download the new universal IOS because I have not warranty contract.

Can I use the ipbase? What is the difference?

Regarding features we use only IPbase, we don't have OSPF and those features.

3750E won't run to that level of code, 12.2(35)SE.  

Here's the thing, the IOS of the 3750G-12, which is 12.2(55)SE9, can be transfered to the non-"E".  You can just copy the BIN file and copy it across.  Your challenge will be to get the 12.2(55)SE9 IOS for the 3750E.

Will it work will depend on the license level of the 3750E.  If the license is IP Base then it will work.

ok, understood.

So how about this procedure - I don't touch the existing stack firmware and run those commands on the new stack member:

switch 3 provision 3750G-12S
>Power off the new stack member
>Connect the new member to the Cisco stack using the stacking cables, 1 loop at a time.
>Power on the new stack member. The switch will come alive and will receive the Cisco IOS version from the master, when that is completed it will be ready to service network requests.

That should work fine, right?

Please excuse my lack of knowledge on Cisco.

Nope, not going to work.  Make sure the new switch has the same IOS level as the rest of the stack.

Hi Leo,

another question please. My stack looks currently like this:
Switch Ports Model              SW Version            SW Image

1 30    WS-C3750E-24TD     12.2(53)SE            C3750E-UNIVERSAL-M
2 12    WS-C3750G-12S       12.2(53)SE            C3750-IPBASE-M

Now I got a new stack member - 3750X
(running c3750e-universalk9-mz.150-2.SE5).

As far as I found out I can`t use 12.2(53) on the 3750X, but 12.2(55) would work.

So I downgraded the 3750X to:
c3750e-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE5.bin

The next step would be to upgrade the existing 3750G and 3750E.

For the 3750G I would use this:
c3750-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE5.bin

For the 3750E I would use this:
c3750e-ipbasek9-mz.122-55.SE5.bin

After that I should be able to stack them together right?

Will there be any problem when I switch from universal to ipbase on the 3750E?

12.2(55)SE5 isn't a very stable IOS.  For a 3750-series family, I'd recommend 12.2(55)SE9.

This will depend on your license.  If your 3750X has a license level of IP Base, then the 3750X universal license can stack nicely with IP Base.

You're sure the "new" unit is another 3750G-12S? If so, I'm surprised it's running a 3750E image.

If you have another 3750G-12S with 35SE9, you should be able to copy the image from it to the "new" 3750G-12S.  (Legally, I believe you're allowed to downgrade the IOS version as long as you don't upgrade the IOS feature set.)

In this combination with image 12.2(50)SE5 they are stacked successfully!
Please keep in mind that one image is UNIVERSALK9-M and other image is IPBASEK9-M.

I have other question are these models affected by Memory Component Issue - Cisco ?
