Using the output ' sh sw stack-ring activity detail ' we can see negative values - can anyone explain this behaviour ?

In terms of the negative value, it is a cosmetic issue and does not indicate packet loss. It is possible that as the counter reaches its maximum value, it wraps to a negative number.
Reboot of the switch should clear this problem.
There have been some cases in the older version of the code and have not seen after 12.2(35)SE

That's interesting as the code is 12.2(25), have you seen a bug listed for this issue ?

Unfortunately I dont have a bug id for this. This is a corner case with very few users ever seeing it, and by the time it was found newer code was already out where this was not reproducible.
Let me know if this helps.
