3750G won't join a stack

I have a 3750G switch that can't detect another switch or be detected through its stack ports. I tried the recommended test; looping a cable between the ports and rebooting. I get the following message as the switch boots: SM:  Detected stack cables at PORT1 PORT2. However, if I connnect another switch, it won't detect it and can't form a stack.

Any suggestions?

Make sure that the new switch is running the same IOS version and feature set as the others in the stack.  Make sure the switch is powered off and you fully loop the stackwise cables into the stack before powering on switch.  Also make sure that you provision the switch by using the command switch <#> provision .

I've done all the basics as far as IOS versions, cabling etc. The problem isn't just that the switch won't join the stack but that the master switch doesn't even see that the switch is connected. If I do a show switch, the added switch doesn't show up in the command output. There appears to be no communication through the switch's stack ports.

Interesting.  I've had issues getting a switch to join a stack before, but never that.  Well if you're sure the switch is provisioned correctly, I would suggest the next step be a write erase on the new switch if you have not tried that already.

I haven't tried write erase yet. I'll test later today and let you know if there's been any change.
