Can you connect a new 3850-XS 10G-SFP+ to an existing stack of 385024U and 385048U while the stack is still powered on?  In otherwise, can I disable the stack cables from the current stack and add to the stack cable to the new 3850 without causing any issues?

thanks in advance,

Hi,

Check this link:

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-3850-series-switches/qa_c67-722110.html

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3850/hardware/installation/guide/b_c3850_hig/b_c3850_hig_chapter_011.html

The suggestion is turn off the stack first to avoid any inconvenience.

:-)

Thanks Julio for this. I found the answer and it is hot stackable.

But just curious if the WS-C3850-12XS-S is stackable with a WS-C3850-24U and WS-C3850-48 platform.

I am getting a platform-mismatch error when issuing the 'show stack' from the new switch and the new switch is displaying the following:

Switch 3 has a platform mismatch with the stack. Only on changing to a compatible version will the switch join

Yeap, the switches should have the same images to work. But no really sure if switches with different amount of ports but with the same serie can build a stack.

:-)

Yes, it was the image issue. Once they were both the same versions, it worked fine.

thanks to everyone who responded.

Thank you for the update

Hello

Not checked if these switch is stack compatible with the others but as long as it is, Then yes you can add this additional switch to the stack whilst the stack is on.

1) make sure the new switch has the same ios and feature set
2) provision, renumber and prioritize the new switch accordingly on the stack and on the new switch which will  NOT be attached to the stack at this time!
3) Power the new switch off
4) Before you can unplug a stackwise cable just make sure by doing so it doesn't make any of the switches in the the stack become isolated ( if you have closed  ring full redundancy setup then this should be okay),

5) Attached the new powered off switch to the stack and close the stack ring cabling again
6) power on the new switch

Note: this procedure will allow existing connectivity , However whilst you perform this, Your backplane bandwidth would decrease to half due to not having a closed ring topology
