Switch# switch 6 renumber 5
the new number goes into effect after that stack member resets (or after you use the reload slot stack-member-number privileged EXEC command) and only if that number is not already assigned to any other members in the stack. Another way to change the stack member number is by changing the SWITCH_NUMBER environment variable.
Recommends to be done in a maintenance window
about second question:
loop cannot be formed from a faulty stack cable.
When you have a stack of switches, you want to create a loop with the stacking cables. Port 2 on one switch connects to port 1 on the next switch. Continue that until the last switch which will connect back to the first switch.
If one cable is faulty probably nothing will happen to STACK.

Hi,
For the first question, you can change it with this command:
switch 6 rename 5
second question, If the stack cable is faulty, there is a possibility for a loop
No, a bad stacking cable will not cause a loop.

Hi,
I had two stacks .each stack had two switches..it was disconnected and mixed up.
So I don't remember what are the switches in stack 1 and stack 2 as it got mixed .
How to find out which switch where belongs to stacks 1 and 2 ?
Or How to add a switch to stack 1 which was a member of stack 2
Do I need to erase all the configurations?
Switch# Role Mac Address Priority Version State
------------------------------------------------------------
*1 Active 204c.9efc.4f80 13 V05 Ready
5 Member 0000.0000.0000 0 0 Provisioned
Here I want to add a member switch which was a member of another stack
Thanks

Make sure the stack is connected correctly using "show switch stack-ring speed"

Hi,
Do I need to enter the command "switch stack-member-number provision" before adding the switch?
Thanks

Hi,
Yes, before you add the switch to the stack, you need to provision it first.
